ARTIST'S STATEMENT
MADE MANIFEST: Recent Spiritual Paintings by Linda McCray
Artist Statement
While painting, my thoughts turn towards timeless spiritual issues. These paintings have specific meaning to me and I hope that they also lend themselves to universal spiritual concerns. My goal for these abstract paintings is to communicate beyond words and nourish the spirit. What is important to me is to create paintings that inspire others to reflect on their spirituality.
Comments from Linda's Advisor, Dr. Rafael Chacón,
Department of Art, The University of Montana
Linda K. McCray is an accomplished graphic artist and painter from Helena, Montana. She is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate at The University of Montana Department of Art. In her recent paintings, Linda attempts the difficult task of revealing the inner workings of the soul through simple, yet rich, abstract images. She writes,
“I paint abstract spiritual paintings which often embody sculptural elements. While painting, my thoughts turn towards timeless spiritual issues. What is really important to me is to create a sensory experience that inspires others to reflect on the mysteries of their soul.”
Linda’s works were used as inspirational and devotional objects during Holy Week this year at U.C.C. This display will be followed with an artist talk and reception later this season.
PALM/PASSION SUNDAY
These two paintings were used as meditational objects on the chancel during Palm/Passion Sunday 2006. From Linda McCray’s Peace Series, these works of acrylic paint
and sand on canvas, though heavy and rich in texture,
are intended to evoke the Peace of God, here represented
as light, color, and air. Used for the Palm half of the worship service, the first painting, Peace V, depicts God’s presence as glorious light, the warmth and joy of God in our midst. The mood shifted in Peace VI, as we entered the more reflective and turbulent story of Christ’s Passion. Yet even in this darker image, God’s light, presence, and hope is felt, a metaphor for the way God touches us even in the darkest places of the soul.
Works of art in the CLOISTER AREA:
In the series of works displayed along the east wall of the cloister area, Linda McCray combines materials such as acrylic paints, glass, and cloth on board to evoke themes of Ascension, Love Poured Freely, and Letting Go. These works combine the genres of painting and sculpture and allude to the struggle between the physical and spiritual realms, binding and freedom, hardship and redemption.
