VISIONING AT UNIVERSITY CONGREGATIONAL, UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST

Without a vision, the people perish.--Proverbs 29:18

University Congregational United Church of Christ has been a home, a shelter, and a sanctuary where meaningful change has occurred in each of our lives. The relationship we hold with UCC is as varied as the number of people who attend, but we have all been deeply blessed. Now we find ourselves at a crossroads with a desire to commit more fully to becoming a community of transformation.

Our Process

At the Congregational Meeting in June of 2008 our church voted to commence a visioning process to discern how well we are engaging our faith and life together in this time and place.

At the June 2009 Congregational meeting, the Cabinet charged three existing workgroups to flesh out the five focus areas developed by the 2008 – 2009 Visioning Task Force. Two working groups explored “Going Deeper” in:

  • Greening the Congregation
  • Service-based ministries
  • Welcoming a younger generation (13 – 30 years-old) into the Church
  • Spiritual formation
  • Fostering intentional relationships

The third working group was tasked to explore the feasibility of a capital and/or mission campaign, based on the recommendations of the previous two workgroups. The three workgroups met regularly throughout the Fall of 2009. An initial comprehensive report from these Visioning Task Force workgroups is presented below for UCC church members to consider as well as the original Visioning Task Force Proposal.

The workgroups recommendations have been the result of many long hours of creative work by dedicated individuals and they recommend that a broad discussion of their findings among church members should continue through the Spring of 2010. As the discussions continue, comprehensive recommendations will be presented to the Congregation for consideration at the May 23rd Congregational meeting.

Additional Resources for Understanding

The following additional resources are available to enliven and enrich the discussion throughout the congregation:

Write your initial recommendations on the form provided at the January 31st congregational meeting and place it in the box as you exit the sanctuary.

Read the informational bulletin boards in the narthex and write a response on the paper pads below each board. Updated information will be added as the Workgroups receive responses.

To deepen your understanding of each Workgroup’s recommendations, a “Discussion Table” will be set up once each month following each church service during which one of the Workgroups will be explaining their recommendations and soliciting feedback.

  • “Going Deeper in Greening the Congregation” and “Going Deeper in Service-based Ministry” – Jim Barber will be at the Discussion Table on February 21, 2010.
  • “Going Deeper in Welcoming the Younger Generation” – Jane McAllister will be at the Discussion Table on March 21, 2010.
